We had a fantastic stay at this backpackers. the location was perfect, with a beautiful view over the harbor and only a short walk to the seashore and old buildings street. the single room we stayed in was cozy and had everything we needed. the owners were lovely and made us feel very welcome. the kitchen was well-equipped and there were plenty of extras like coffee and tea. the lounge area was comfortable and had a cozy atmosphere.
The pricey penguins show in the evening, which we found to be a typical tourist rip off. We would recommend skipping it and instead trying to spot penguins for free.

Great central location, close to the city center and beautiful sea views from the living room. Friendly receptionist who was always willing to help.
Poor sound insulation, making it difficult to sleep with noisy neighbors. Lack of interaction with staff, preferring human welcome instead of dealing with codes and emails.

I had the pleasure of staying at a super cute affordable gem in Oamaru. The single room was surprisingly spacious and adorable, perfect for a solo traveler like me. The hostel had a great location, just a short stroll away from all the interesting parts of town. The views from the hostel were breathtaking, and the cleanliness was impeccable. The host was friendly and always available when needed. The quirky decor really added to the charm of the place. I had a fantastic experience and would highly recommend this hostel for anyone looking for their own space while still being able to interact with other travelers.
Despite these great features, there were a couple of minor issues that could be easily fixed. The bed had a broken slat, making a sunken part in the middle, but it wasn't uncomfortable enough to hinder my sleep.

Limited staff presence, felt a bit vulnerable.

The location of the hostel is great, with important places in walking distance and a nice view from the lounge. the rooms are spacious, with well-made bunk beds that provide privacy with curtains and lights. the hostel has plenty of open and friendly spaces for relaxation. the staff is very friendly and welcoming.
One guest mentioned that the hostel is located near an industrial area, which could lead to some noise in the morning.

We stayed in the 6 bed dorm by the front door. The beds were amazing, separate bunk beds so you couldn’t feel the person above or below you moving around. You got a little shelf in your bunk with a curtain for more privacy. Plenty of space in the room for everyone. It’s close to town with the brewery only a 5 min walk away and the views from the lounge are amazing! The shared lounge, sun room and kitchen/dining area are amazing all with beautiful views of the water and plenty of morning sun. We got a sea view room which was so comfy and spacious. The night we were there only one other couple was staying so we had a quiet stay and felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. I would highly recommend Oamaru Backpackers even if you prefer hotels. It's such a great price for an excellent stay. Within walking distance to everything! Staff were super friendly and helpful. View from the room was amazing, room was cosy with electric blanket. The location was perfect walking distance to see the penguins in the evening and close to all the shops, restaurants and Countdown. Free breakfast was available in the morning. Free parking right outside.
